Welcome! If you made it here, most likely you purchased a copy of the
Cubase SX book I wrote for Peach Pit Press. I hope it's making your
experience with Cubase easier and more productive, and you have my
sincere thanks for choosing my book.
When putting together the first version, we decided that it would be a
good idea to have some kind of musical example that people could use to
try out some of the concepts described in the text. Writing about
making music is a bit like dancing about architecture, so the original
plan was to have me dissect a piece of my own music and host the files
on my own personal web site. Various events conspired to keep that from
happening, so when we revised the book for v. 2 of SX we wanted to make
sure we had an audio project that you could use to get your hands dirty
with the program. Thanks to Magnatune and Emma's Mini, this page is
precisely that.
The process of remixing Blue Glove is described in Appendix B of the SX
book so I won't go into that here, but nevertheless a few notes. First,
the archive of the project and audio files is a little less than 20 MB.
That should be possible to download even on a dialup connection if you
have some time. With broadband the file will download in only a couple
of minutes. I tested the archive on both PCs and Macs with "vanilla" SX
installs, and it worked great for me. You will get a few error messages
when you start up, but if you click through them the project should
sound right.
If you have performance problems, try freezing the VSTi channels. The
vocoder carrier is triggered almost throughout the song, so it takes up
more CPU than is strictly necessary. On my machine (a not terribly fast
Athlon based PC) the performance meter only moves about halfway up at
its highest point. A fast G4 and any G5 should have no problems playing
back the whole project.
If you have any problems with the project or have other questions, feel
free to contact me at cubase@thadbrown.com and I'll to get back to you.
I can't promise it will be right away, but I'll do my best to return
mails as soon as possible. I hope the book helps you to make more and
better music with Cubase. Always remember that's the whole point--making
music. It's easy to get caught up in the next plug-in or dreaming about
a $3500 mic pre, but what you have in Cubase and a decent computer is
the kind of recording setup that involved serious monetary commitment
only a decade ago.
