From lyrical ballads to groove to J.S. Bach, this unique collaboration traverses some diverse musical territory, but always uses one cohesive and incredibly lucid voice to do so. <i>Sky</i> features the music of composer/pianist Bill Douglas as well as the masterful tabla playing of Ty Burhoe. Subtly bewitching microhouse meets minimal techno meets gently unfolding melodies and intricate, sophisticated beats. <i>Otherwake</i> definitely deepens our Chris Harvey fandom, and we love how throughout the entire album it sounds like there are zillions of synthy little bubbles softly popping all around you. All the more so on good speakers.

The Great Lavra Belltower is one of the most notable features of the Kiev skyline and this unique recording captures the sounds of its renowned church bells. The bells are a popular attraction not only among worshippers of Eastern Orthodoxy, but a huge range of people practicing different healing and relaxation practices. Among them, it's said that these particular bells have health giving benefits due to their unusually pure consonances. We don't know whether that's true, but there is definitely something magical about the chiming of bells, and these are some of the most distinctive and resonant on earth. A rare and wondrous recording.

Rich litle melodies and gentle harmonies make for a soothing album of instrumental bass guitar by the capable Trip Wamsley. Wamsley has a patient sense of timing, allowing his music to unfold gracefully and on its own time. Says one reviewer, "this album is a quest through mood, tone, timbre, texture," and as the album title suggests, <i>Curve</i> is completely without any sharp angels. Instead, it's as polished and graceful as an old cherry wood banister.

Bach's pure polyphony gets along grandly with Katherine Roberts Perl's improvisatory spark for a recording that is fresh and fluid, yet also skillfully precise. Many musicians are intimidated by the complex, cerebral nature of the fugues, but Perl's expressive gifts and masterful sense of timing mean that she took great pleasure in these compositions, and her delight definiely comes through in the recording. Perl chose to performs these pieces in related key groups, which she describes as "a much more organic choice for the player." Here she starts with the sharp keys of book two, going around the circle of fifths. The next installment to be released later this year will be the flat keys, progressing through the other side of the circle. Her choice makes for a more natural, and highly rewarding listening experience. Says Perl, "It is with great reverence and humility that I attempt to communicate the awesome breadth, not only of Bach's compositional skill, but the power of his emotional and spiritual expressions."
