Ralph Rousseau Meulenbroeks : Moved By Marais.
Virtuoso viola da gamba.
In 1656 Marin Marais was born to a long line of humble Parisian shoemakers but would later go on to be a court musician at Versailles and eventually, a leading French composer. In his life he fathered 19 children, was an amateur painter, and wrote a lot of exquisite music for Louis XIV's favorite instrument: the viola da gamba. His name has since become synonymous with the gamba, much like recording artist Ralph Rousseau Meulenbroeks--or the "gambomaniac" as he's sometimes called. Known for his dramatic, engaging performances, Meulenbroeks maintains a relationship to the gamba that has been likened to a "love story," and his affinity for it—as well as for Marais—is audible in this recording. Full liner notes included with purchase.
